Two children, Karim, an Algerian boy, and Nadine, a European girl, grow up separately in colonized Algeria, during the war of independence (1954-1962). One year after the independence of Algeria, Nadine and her family leave the country and settle in France. Nadine and Karim meet a decade later at a French university and fall in love, but their different personal, cultural and religious backgrounds become an insurmountable obstacle to their relationship. After graduation, they go their separate ways. Karim goes back to Algeria, hoping to realize his dream of a free democratic country, and Nadine begins her teaching career in France, then eventually moves to the U.S. Karim lives through the tumultuous decades of the 80s and 90s. Nadine continues to drift emotionally but she eventually settles in Boston. The story seeks to illustrate the power of cultural, religious, and ideological contexts on the lives of individuals. Will Nadine and Karim eventuallyt reconnect?
