In a post apocalyptic world outside of Flagstaff, Arizona, Jamie, leader of a survival community, must guide his people through a labyrinth of uncertainty as space aliens arrive and the military commander of the local fort confronts a host of unknowns. The aliens appear peaceful. Through dreams Jamie finds he was once one of them. Now he must now unravel their true intent. This disconcerting knowledge leads Jamie to an unfolding of strange but curious abilities such as a Sound Language where tonal complexes can alter the very nature of matter. He must learn to use his new abilities to protect not only his own people but the soldiers at the fort to keep the peace. When hostile government officials arrive, integrating a distrustful army General, and equally cautious aliens into a peaceful alliance proves next to impossible. Jamie needs every ounce of his ingenuity and new abilities to keep the peace and circumvent a gang of religious fanatics bent on destroying everything. Through all of this Jamie struggles to understand the complex nature of the aliens, himself, and the world around him.
