The Robinson kids-Tom, Susie, and Benny-go back into Atlanta to rescue their dad's brother, John. Dr. John Robinson and his wife, Carol, were working in a hospital there when the pulse hit. The hospital soon became a target for starving mobs of people. The kids reach the community of an enterprising friend of their dad's in Atlanta. Their friend, "Ezra" takes them into his protected community. A gang of escaped prisoners attacks the kids as they enter Atlanta. The "Prison Gang" makes it unsafe for the kids to leave Ezra's compound. This prison gang must be dealt with before it will be safe for the kids and their uncle to leave Atlanta.

Susie worries that Ezra's walls around his community may not protect them from the gathering crowds of starving people.
