Children of Glowworm

The 'Children of Glowworm' by Amit Saha explores the world of autism, the life of the children with autism, and the agony and struggle of their parents, and families. Amit himself, being the father of an autistic son, fills the pages with genuine feelings and experience to weave an intriguing and effortless story. This novella set in Bolpur, a small town in West Bengal, India vividly portrays the life of the protagonists spanning through the last decade. Amit makes us realize that autism is not a disease, but a certain genetic condition or developmental disorder, that Neer, Piku, and Rishi, are of course different from other children, but they do have a beautiful world of their own: they can think purely, can observe and feel the nature closely, can write story or poem, can paint, and at times they outdo their normal counterparts. The 'Special Children' is nothing but a mere convention or rather our unawareness. They are not doomed, nor are their parents. This novella is a kind of autistic awareness campaign in the guise of a painful journey of life. This novella reveals the stark reality of how the so-called normal society pushes the victims and their kin to spiritual crises which serves as the conflict of the story. Whether these children and the family get a better world or not, whether their dream comes true or not drives the story forward, and how the normal world reacts to them is the resolution of the story. Will Piku, Rishi, and the like get a better world to live in? Will Piku, Rishi, and Neer's and their parent's pensive journey end in light? What do these children think about us when they overhear 'Special Children'? What if they think of us being special people? The novella forces us to encounter these questions. It's a journey of life from darkness to light.
