Mary Lefhoko, a white American ex-pat living in the town of Maun in Botswana's Okavango Delta, gets a job relieving the regular receptionist at an orphanage. She witnesses the altercation between the owner and a visiting Afro-pop singer from Gaborone who is looking for the son her mother gave up on her behalf a dozen years before. The singer asks her old school friend, Sergeant Dice Modise of the Botswana CID, to look into the matter.Mary disappears, supposedly having returned to the USA.The singer is stabbed to death in her home in Gaborone after a music practice. Apparently a robbery, it raises Modise's interest as the killing is too professional.
