Angie Harrison lands in a London that is all a-tither As if the prospect of a hard Brexit isn't bad enough, now a former MP's (Member of Parliament's) infant granddaughter has been abducted. The suspects are two immigrant women. Curiously, the BBC would soon discover that a series of bizarre stroller exchanges on the Millennium Bridge between two immigrant women had been happening for weeks prior to the abduction as a possible rehearsal for the crime. Angie, hired as a freelance writer to write an article about that very bridge, feels personally and professionally compelled to investigate. The investigation takes her from that magnificent modern bridge to a desultory warehouse reminiscent of a Dickensian workhouse, and then from Shakespeare's Globe to an Arsenal football match. Yet it always seems to return to the nondescript Eels and Ales Pub and a fellow investigator who seems official, perhaps Scotland Yard, perhaps not. Along the way Angie has to confront alpha female femme fatales, the fraught relationships between immigrants and the rest of British society, a Victorian ghost in the background, and, worst of all, a manila envelope of a prig who may have all the answers. Oh, and she also has the best sex that she's ever had. In the warm afterglow, this mystery and the people in it appear so baffling, but perhaps that's because everything is exactly as it seems. Will Angie see what's hidden in plain sight? Or will the BBC news reader have to read the crushing news of her failure to a country already struggling to keep a stiff upper lip?
