The article that followed was witty and thought-provoking as well as respectful and informative. We had met at the Grand Prix motorcycle races and soon became friends as well as colleagues, sharing rental cars, hotel rooms, and scoops. We enjoyed a similar strain of dark humor, extreme pedantry, premature curmudgeonliness, and a deep mistrust of pretension and self-importance.
