A compelling look at life in the first part of the century

I enjoyed Chia : A Powerful Recuerdo .It is a glimpse into a whole community and way of life in the earlier part of this century. The action takes place on the banks of the San Antonio River. Now the river is a tourist spot but it's banks were once home to a thriving ,close knit Hispanic community. Although, the writing style is not polished ,it is still a powerful book. It portrays a dangerous world bounded by fear ,superstition, and ritual but also enriched by a sense of unity and tradition .
