From America's foremost chess coach and game strategist for Netflix's The Queen's Gambit comes the ultimate chess reference--a visual dictionary of over 1,000 moves, rules, strategies, and concepts.... This description may be from another edition of this product.
This book has been elucidating for me as someone new to chess. Some reviewers with less flattering comments may have had misplaced expectations about its contents, because this book is exactly what it says it is: a dictionary. Like any other dictionary, it is most helpful for new and intermediate learners, and may have limited value for those with a more advanced base of knowledge. Also like any other dictionary, it is not primarily meant to be read from cover to cover like a novel (though I have benefitted from approaching this book in that way), but rather to be used as a source of reference material for when specific questions arise during the course of engaging with other chess books, conversations, and practice games. This book is not an in-depth strategy guide, puzzle book, explication of chess theory, or catalogue of famous historical games, nor does it ever claim to be; it uses a little bit of everything for its own purposes as a broad collection of reference material on everything chess.

I've got to put in a good word for this book!

After reading all the negative reviews of this book, I have to put in a good word for it. It's a good thumbnail review of concepts you've probably learned in other books, and will jog your memory regarding lessons you've learned in your games. I'm a "developing player," rated about 1300-1400, and I gained a lot by just skimming through, following the diagrams, and figuring out the puzzles. Give it a try!
Dictionary of terms

Of all the chess strategies and tactical books out there it is so great that the average layman chess player who is not a "club Player" has a reference of terms and axioms used by the "royal" game society to be presented to the general public and the "society".Can you imagine trying to learn the english language without a dictionary.Well, this is a chess dictionary and I commend the author in an age of "strategies and tactics."(For the sake of sales)
