Handler's early years were marked by both idyllic summers on Martha's Vineyard and profound tragedy, as her eldest brother, Chet, died in a hiking accident when she was just nine years old. This event deeply shaped her perspective and later informed much of her candid humor.

At 19, Handler left her New Jersey roots and moved to Los Angeles to pursue acting. Living with her aunt in Bel Air and working as a waitress, she quickly discovered a knack for storytelling. At 21, after amusing a group with her tale of a DUI arrest, she realized her calling in stand-up comedy.
