Policemen arrive at Will Payne's door with the news that his father, a racehorse trainer, has been attacked and is seriously ill. Despite having not spoken to his father for two years, Will learns that he is the number one suspect. Dragged back to his hometown of Malton in North Yorkshire, Will is cajoled into taking charge of the racing yard, only to discover the business is on its knees.

However, there is one hope. A young unraced filly named Catwalk who is being prepared for the Albany at Royal Ascot. With the help of two friends, Will sets out to get the two-year-old to Ascot in one piece. If only things were that simple He soon finds himself embroiled in the unsolved twenty-year-old murder of his grandfather.
