From Preface: "'The Chauvinist and Other Stories' is the second book of short stories published by a Japanese American writer in the United States in 30 years. The first book was 'Yokohama, California,' also by Toshio Mori, published in 1949. Born in Oakland, California in 1910, Toshio Mori is one of the foremost chroniclers of the Japanese American community. During the past 40 years, he has written hundreds of short stories and essays, along with several novels. His writings span time and space, from the crowded flower nurseries of San Leandro, Ca in the 1930s through the bleak World War II concentration camp barracks of Topaz, Utah, to the present. With wit and compassion, Toshio Mori has illuminated for us the callings and visions of gardeners, housewives, artists, students, and shopkeepers who are among his closest neighbors.
