An Interesting View of Chatham

Of all the towns on Cape Cod, Chatham is probably the town that has remained the same over the years. Perhaps its location a bit away from Route 6 has helped. A strong belief in the character of the town by residents, combined with tourists who like to visit a typical Cape Cod town, summer residents who like the town just as it is, and careful control over development would likely be the more compelling reasons that the new Chatham is not all that unlike the Old Chatham, at least in appearance. The downtown still has small private businesses. Even the major chains in the town's center, CVS and Dunkin Donuts still have to have the quaint store fronts that match the architecture of the town. The gardens of the Chatham Bars Inn are always a showcase, just as they were in the Inn's heyday, families still frolic along the undeveloped beaches, and in the early afternoon, people can watch actual fishing baits unload the catch of the day. A quick perusal through POSTCARD HISTORY SERIES: CHATHAM MASSACHUSETTS complied by Robert Zaremba and Danielle Jeanloz, shows how the Chatham of today is so much like the Chatham of yesteryear as well as the ways that the town has changed over the years. The book itself is basically a collection of postcards from the early twentieth century when Chatham became a popular vacation destination to a few from modern times. Many of the postcards include a brief description that tells the story or gives the historical description of what is depicted in the scene. It's not all that different from other books in the series, but the popularity of postcards with Cape Cod tourists ensures that the Cape Cod towns included in the series have a wide variety of scenes that can be included. I purchased the book for two reasons. First I love all things Cape Cod and of all the places on the Cape, Chatham is probably my favorite based both on the quaintness of the town and great memories of childhood vacations. I am also a post card collector. Many of the postcards used in this collection would be difficult, if not impossible to find, so I now know what to look for when searching for unique postcards and know that if I can't have certain cards in my collection, at least their available in this book.
