After 3 decades of holding down important elected offices like treasurer of the Charles Town Jr. High Band Boosters, I expanded my horizons in 2008 and ran for a seat on the Jefferson County WV. County Commission. All those years of being a community activist paid off: I won.Chasing Votes: I Got Elected, Now What? is a humorous look back on my six years as a county commissioner. While national politicians address issues like world peace, I voted to amend tax tickets for divorced couples based on who got custody of what car; recognized an Eagle Scout for sewing seat cushions for the courthouse and stood ready to measure a woman's cleavage as prescribed by state law to check for violations of obscenity laws. I learned all about the budget process and can now use terms like "unencumbered funds" and "total weighted assessed value" in a sentence. Local politics offers a ring side seat to grass roots democracy. I learned a lot and this book passes on useful lessons to others wanting to make a difference, either as an elected official or as a community activist.Being a progressive Democrat in a state and county becoming more and more conservative is not easy.
