Overholser's exciting story hangs on the identity of a payroll thief. The prime suspect is the town drunk, Billy Eckstrum, who is shot by a bufallo hunter. Unfortunately, Eckstrum's face is destroyed by the bullet and his identification is based on his clothing. Eckstrum's daughter and others come to doubt that it is her father's body and the search for truth begins. The plot hinges, just as in my book, Playing God, on the possibility that a criminal contrives to escape justice by feigning death. This is a great western mystery with strong family relationship issues.
