Charlie is quiet and shy. She struggles to make new friends and is very self-conscious, more comfortable reading or talking to her Grandma than children her own age. She dreams of having a pony and riding in horse shows, dreams that seem completely impossible. She is saving her allowance so she can one day buy a saddle and bridle if she can only somehow have a pony. Charlie lives in a big city with her Grandmother, her mother Rose and Grandma's dog, Old Blue. Her Grandmother has helped her create a herd of horses made of cutouts from magazines pasted onto cardboard. Grandma becomes very ill and the family has to sell the house in order to pay for her care. Charlie's life takes a very different course as they move to Grandma's old dilapidated farmhouse in the country in order to keep Grandma's dog, Old Blue. Charlie has many challenges living in the country and needs to learn to be resilient and strong, both when she falls off a pony and when she meets new people. There are new friends and the opportunity to learn to ride and realize her dreams.
