Charlevoix in Oil: the Paintings of Peter Donald CampbellP.D. or Don as his friends called him, was born in Whitehall, Michigan in 1889. At the age of eight, he moved with his parents to Charlevoix where his father, Peter Dougal Campbell, owned and operated the steamer Beaver that sailed between Charlevoix and Beaver Island carrying passengers and supplies. P.D. worked with his father while attending high school. After graduation in 1907, he attended Michigan Agricultural College (now Michigan State University), and studied surveying and engineering. In 1912 he received his Master of Steamships license. In October 1915, P.D. married Julia Ida Corlett and took a job as second mate on the passenger steamer Manitou. During World War I, he became captain of a tug on the Erie Canal moving army supplies. In 1919 he and Julia returned to Charlevoix, opened the Campbell Boot Shop, and raised two daughters, Margaret Jeannette and Julia Anne, the author of this book.In the early 1940s P.D. started dabbling in oil painting but couldn't find the time to pursue it. In 1948 after the death of his wife, he turned his dining room into a studio and painted with a passion. His technique was to take photos around town and then paint from them during the cold winter months. P.D.'s paintings were given to friends and sold to the public, but he kept his favorites for the family. His last painting was completed a month before his death in 1963 at age 74.
