Good book, much better 2nd edition

Excellent introduction to basic methods of logic and proving. If you're gonna get this book, make sure it's the latest edition.

nice book

The book is great at explaining the fundamentals of abstract math. As long as you really read every page and internalize the information as you move along, understanding things should be a cinch.

Excellent for a classroom

I used this book in a class taught by the author in the late 1990's, and I really enjoyed using this book. Reading some of the reviews from independent learners here, however, I can see where their frustration lies; the class was very focused on the teacher working together with the students, and the students working together with each other, so I imagine that a lot of the help one receives (and gives!) when working on the theorems in this book are absent. That's unfortunate; it'd be interesting if there was some sort of online accompaniment containing "hints" for some of the exercises. That said, however, I do think this book is excellent for the classroom. The cycle of learning something and then putting it to use by solving a theorem, which is subsequently used to learn something new, is really enjoyable and in some sense blurred the lines between teacher and student. It was as though the professor was serving as a mentor to guide us, as opposed to feeding us information or telling us how to do things, and as a result we really felt like we had accomplished something by the end of the semester--as opposed to merely having learned something and solved toy problems with our newfound knowledge.
