As the seasons progress from the spring of 1971 to that of 1973, Vietnam veteran David Stewart's perception of his own gender alters. Initially simply a vehicle for short-term sexual gratification, wearing women's clothing draws him to the transgender demi-monde of "Charlie's" tavern and a relationship with a married man. Lynn, David's female personality, discovers the allure of femininity even as David falls in love with a woman. The increasingly compelling desire for female identity and the consequent unsustainable struggle to live two existences lead her to hormone replacement and a move to New York City to live as Lynn fulltime. A chance encounter with a police detective plunges her into an oddly multi-faceted involvement that may complete her gender journey.
