Change Begins With Us
What happens when the better life you hoped to give your children leaves you with too little time to hear them?
Ruth and Mudiwa leave Zimbabwe for Britain with qualifications, ambition and hopes for their family's future. But exhausting care shifts, debt, separation from loved ones and the pressure to succeed begin to overwhelm them. While they struggle to keep going, their children face dangers the adults have not yet recognised.
Based on a true story and informed by lived experience, Change Begins With Us: Raising Children Between Cultures explores the distance that can grow between what parents intend and what children experience.
Melony Axe brings difficult subjects into an honest conversation: migration, cultural expectations, alcohol, family conflict, online grooming and criminal exploitation. The book also explores how parents, schools and professionals can recognise concerns, respond with care and begin rebuilding trust.
Across 18 chapters, readers will find practical activities, reflection prompts, a family conversation toolkit, support information and 48 questions and answers for parents, young people and professionals. Some scenes and dialogue have been developed for the narrative. The final three chapters offer a clearly identified imagined continuation exploring later consequences and the work of coming home.
Written for parents, carers, educators and community professionals, this book invites adults to listen more closely, seek support and make changes that protect children while respecting the strengths families carry.
Children need to know they can tell somebody. Parents need somewhere to turn, too.
