This is a wonderful book to read for multiple reasons! Besides being well written, it is interesting to read from a historical perspective. It touches upon social issues such as civil rights, women in science, and progress in science. Dr. Joan Lorch Staple has shared with us her amazing life. It begins with her life as one of the first women in research science in England, her marriage, and eventual departure from science as she became Mummy. From there we are led through her experiences moving from England with young children to Alabama in the midst of the Civil Rights movement and their departure from the south to Buffalo, NY. Upon their move Dr. Staple had the opportunity to go back into research. Dr. Lorch Staple describes the challenges of being a working mother, a woman in science, and some ethical issues that many scientific researchers face. I strongly suggest reading Joan's first book too: Chance and Choice: My First Thirty Years Chance and Choice: My First Thirty Years
