Challenge to Agronomy for the Future

Opportunities for agronomists to serve mankind have never been greater than now. This profession especially has a vital role to fulfill in keeping American agriculture strong and contributing to the knowledge of agriculture abroad; a role designed to maintain production on a level adequate to meet the necessities of life in a world threatened by overpopulation. The problem for the future is all the more difficult because of the current world-wide shortage of professional personnel in agronomy. Previous special programs of the American Society of Agronomy have emphasized the need for increased food production to meet world demands, and the need for developing land and water resources for present and future needs. Manpower resources, along with technology, are key considerations in the accomplishment of these goals. The challenge is to identify and evaluate the agronomic needs for the future and to establish effective programs to meet them.
