Atravel is a nation of floating islands hidden within the clouds, bound together by chains. Its inhabitants understand it to be the last remnants of human civilization, formed when the Great Arbiter, the creator of the skies, saved a select few from a great war that ended all life on Earth.

On one of the islands reside Aer and his twin brother, Alius, a pair of orphans soon to come of age. With no money, connections, or luck, they face a bleak future. But when the Advent Trials-a set of competitions testing youths and their mastery of Sky Control, the ability to shape the air to one's will-are announced, Alius sees a chance for him and Aer to make a name for themselves.

Aer, however, knows that the odds are stacked against them. Their peers are far better trained, favored by their caretakers for coming from more privileged backgrounds. What's worse, Atravel views those struggling as deserving of their hardships, being justly placed under such conditions by the Great Arbiter. Will the brothers be able to rise and overcome their disadvantages, or are they doomed to remain helpless forever?
