Cell Wall Deficient Forms: Stealth Pathogens, 2nd Edition, is a comprehensive text-reference that covers major aspects of cell wall deficient microbes (L forms). The book discusses protoplasts as efficient genetic tools, L forms essential to the food chain for their ability to reclaim nitrogen in the air, an L form pathogenic to a flowering plant, and new information on male sterility caused by streptococcal L forms in drosophila.
This excellent book covers history (e.g. Almquist's significant contributions) and nomenclature (the boon/bane of the working biologist!) and tons and tons and tons of lab technique, "what ifs", "gotchas", and scanning electron microscopy. I am still reading it, and I can already tell this is going to be a "re-read". It's dense with information, yet retains readability. Perhaps this reviewer is prejudiced by his pre-existing preference for science that balances the synthetic with the analytic, and the integrative with the logical/reductionist, but I would think any working virologist, bacteriologist, pathologist would find this (admittedly pricey!) book a "Must Have". I truly hope you enjoy this book as much as I am!
