Celiac Disease and Liver

Celiac disease (CD) is a gluten-induced autoimmune enteropathy that classically manifests as a malabsorption syndrome secondary to villous atrophy (VA) of the proximal intestine. It may be associated with various extra-intestinal manifestations (EIM), including hepatic manifestations. The gluten-free diet (GFD) conditions the prognosis of the disease. The aim of our work was to specify the epidemio-clinical and evolutionary data of CD and associated hepatic manifestations under GFD. One hundred and four patients (mean age 26 and gender ratio = 0.2) were included. The disease was revealed mainly by diarrhea (65.4%). The seropositivity rate of the disease was 84.2%. 38 patients (36.6%) had hepatic manifestations, represented by cryptogenic disease (n=18) and associated disease (n=20). Cryptogenic disorders were divided into cryptogenic hypertransaminemia (n=17) and cryptogenic cirrhosis (n=1). All patients were placed on RSG, with good progression of CD and associated liver disease if adhered to.
