The one rule worth breaking.
Cecum is a very small horse on a long gray beach. He is the fastest thing on it, and nobody knows but
him.
Pylorus, who is the biggest horse in the sand hills, has three rules. Cecum likes two of them. The one
he will not keep is the one about staying out of the water past your knees.
Then the wind turns around. A light goes out far offshore and does not come back. And in the
morning the sea leaves boards, and rope, and a hat sitting up in the sand, dry inside - and the biggest
horse Cecum has ever seen, caught at the edge of the water.
Cecum's whole story is told in the novel Cecum of Kill Devil Hills, for readers 9 and up.
