The Minoan civilization, centered at Knossos on the island of Kephtor (now the Greek Island of Crete), was one of the richest, most advanced, and most powerful cultures in the eastern Mediterranean during the Bronze Age. Around 1625 BCE, the volcano at Santorini (Thera), sixty miles to the north of Kephtor, had one of the greatest eruptions of the last 10,000 years. The pumice it spewed buried Akrotiri, a Minoan trading emporium on the southern tip of Thera, and coated downwind islands and eastern Kephtor. Flows of molten rock and ash from its multiple explosions and earthquakes generated tsunamis that struck the north coast of Kephtor. Book I of this series, Cavanila's Choices: A Novel of the Minoan Cataclysm, is a fictional account of the near-term effects of that eruptive event on Minoa. It is a story of how the life of a young princess, Cavanila, is uprooted and nearly destroyed by ensuing events common to even modern civilizations subjected to major disasters whether they be natural or man-made.
