Book 4 continues the saga of Owen Boyle, an Irish immigrant and horseman who fights in the Civil War with the 6th New York Volunteer Cavalry. Following the war and the death of his romantic interest, Owen travels to the central plains where he joins the newly formed 7th Cavalry under George Armstrong Custer. The 7th Cavalry rides against the Indians in Kansas and the adjoining territories. Owen, true to his talents and character, advances to platoon leader, as the men fight to hold the illusive enemy in check and facilitate expansion into and through the heartland of the nation. He finds a home in the Army, but longs for a woman in his life. Again, events re drawn from history and trace the activities of the 7th from 1866 through 1868.
