Although smoldering for a couple of years, the Lincoln County War exploded into open conflict in February, 1878 when an Englishman, John Henry Tunstall was suddenly murdered by a posse of dubious authority. Before the struggle was over some 200 persons were actively involved in the strife out of a population of merely 2000. Lincoln County was 30,000 square miles, or about the same area as the State of South Carolina, in the southeastern corner of New Mexico territory. This turmoil gave birth to a number of infamous and famous characters such as Billy-the-Kid, Pat Garrett, John S. Chisum, Lew Wallace, and others. When the killings and peril in the county expanded to involve almost everyone in the region, the citizens appealed all the way to the White House and a New York attorney was dispatched representing both the Department of Justice and the Department of Interior to investigate the cause and effect of the troubles as well as a similar menace in Colfax County in the northern reaches of the Territory. Angel's findings resulted in the resignations of the Governor, United States Attorney, an Indian Agent and others. This volume is a summation of his report to Washington.
