Mickey O'Brien is an unassuming literature professor at a New England college who comes into possession of small black kettle, which turns out to be an ancient artifact called the Cauldron of Unrest. Despite his initial disbelief, Mickey discovers that the Cauldron is a portal to another world, a world of magic called Unruhe. A physical object in our world, the Cauldron morphs into a medallion that Mickey wears around his neck while in Unruhe. On his first visit to Unruhe, Mickey learns much about the land from a priest of a race of furry, otter-like creatures called lethinnen. The priest, Artrius, convinces Mickey that they need his aid to combat the evil of an ancient Sorceress. The catch is that Mickey can only cross between Unruhe and Earth at the full phase of the moon, and the Sorceress can track him when he is Unruhe. She can sense his presence and the danger he represents, so he will be a target whenever he is in Unruhe. Mickey agrees to help, although he harbors grave doubts about his heroic qualities. Artrius takes Mickey to a local council of lethinnen. One council member, Demethys, is a lethinnen wizard of minor ability. The council votes to have Demethys take Mickey to the Star Council, which is the ruling body of magic workers in Unruhe. The Council meets on the far-off Tercian Islands. Demethys realizes that he needs the aide of a much more proficient wizard if Mickey is to challenge the Sorceress. Mickey and Demethys have various adventures on the road, and gather several companions to them: Bryndan, a minstrel of questionable reputation and unsavory skills; Ariela, a warrior of considerable ability and beauty; and Merecin, a human wizard who is an Elder of the Star Council. During their journey, Mickey and Ariela begin to form a close bond, which despite Ariela's reluctance, eventually becomes romantic. At each step of their journey, Mickey continues to battle the doubts he has about being actually able to challenge the Sorceress. The four travel to the ruins of Myak, an ancient city now deserted that once belonged to a race called the Myaklan. The Myaklan are believed to have been exterminated by the Sorceress. Merecin is searching for a magical artifact called the Scepter of Myak that will aid Mickey in his final confrontation with the Sorceress. At the end, they discover that the true power to defeat the Sorceress is not the Cauldron Medallion or Scepter of Myak - they will have to look within if they are to overcome her evil.
