Caught in the Current : A Novel of Cold War Ukraine

By Daniel Hryhorczuk

The summer of 1970 is a tumultuous time in America-an era of antiwar protests, demands for equal rights, and a generation questioning the values it inherited. It is an equally revolutionary time in Alec's life.

Raised in Chicago as Ukrainian, Alec is caught between two identities: Is he American or Ukrainian? Searching for answers, he travels behind the Iron Curtain, where his beliefs are pushed to the limit as he undertakes a risky mission to learn about political dissidents in Soviet Ukraine.

Detained, interrogated, and ultimately deported from the Soviet Union, Alec seeks refuge in earthquake-ravaged Banja Luka. There, far from home and forced to confront what he has experienced, he begins to see himself-and the world-from a different perspective.

Caught between cultures, political upheaval, and the competing claims of heritage and home, Alec must decide where he belongs and what truly defines him.

Set against the upheavals of 1970 and the stark divide between East and West, Caught in the Current is a historical coming-of-age novel about identity, cultural heritage, freedom, and the search for belonging.
