FIRR-Kids! Review

Following the title's lead, this text is ultra simple throughout. A single word introduces the readers to each new character, followed up with the refrain "Thank goodness for that!" A full day with Cat includes terrorizing the neighbor's dog, tangling with the garden sprinkler, and narrowly escaping a tricycle casualty. The warm illustrations show close attention to detail, which is essential to the story line. The facial expressions (those big green eyes!) and body language convey the intentions and emotions of the characters succinctly. Each time you pick up this book, you will likely note a few more illustrative details that escaped your attention on the prior read. The sparsely worded adventures of Cat are ideal for beginning readers or toddlers. It manages to be both a fun read and an excellent tool for building their cognitive skills (sneaky!). A particularly good choice for the this-is-the-last-one-I-mean-it bedtime book.

Very good book

This book is awsome. The pictures alone are great and tell most of the story, which is good for very young children. The text is very short, excellent thing for toddlers, who usually have a very short attention span, and for beginning readers. Both categories of readers will also appreciate the frequent repetitions and the predictability. I bought two, one for my child and one for a friend of mine who does nt speak English, and I'm buying two more to give as birthday presents fro children under 5. I would also recommend this book as one of the first Englsh books to absolute beginner learners of English and as a gift to the serious cat lover.

Cat

Cat written by Mike Dumbleton and illustrated by Craig Smith is a scarcely worded picture book with a lot of action. The big, orange striped cat has the most wonderful expressions and green eyes. The story is a simple series of cat and mouse type chases scenes with a refrain of "Thank goodness for that!" This story could work equally well for emergent literacy as it has only about a 30-word vocabulary or as a read aloud where listeners will love joining in on the refrain. Cat is a unique and fun read!
