A sophisticated, Spanish style solo with great appeal for the advancing student, this moody piece opens with a darkly romantic L.H. melody punctuated by off beat, R.H. chordal accompaniment. In ABA form, the middle section's tempo becomes faster and emphasizes the rhythmic underpinnings of the entire work, calling to mind a guitar and castanets heard in a Spanish taverna. The ending features a freely flowing melisma over a pedal point, so typical of Spanish style music. This piece is an excellent choice for teaching expressive performance.
