Cassiopeia, a young, black, house slave, is rescued from the clutches of Enoch, the depraved son of Roselawn Plantation owner Hiram Penrose. Hiram sends her away to St. Benedict's monastery on nearby Skidaway Island for safety. For the next several years Cassie is educated by Huguenot nuns while Enoch is exiled to their plantation on Ossabaw Island. Cassie excels at her studies under Sister Bernadette and becomes fluent in French. In September, 1779 the French fleet arrives in Savannah to support the Americans in the fight to liberate the city from the British. Among the troops brought by the French are 550 Saint Domingueans (Haitians). In exchange for the promise of her freedom, Cassie is convinced to assist the French as an interpreter. She is sent with foragers to buy provisions for their encampment at Beaulieu Plantation. In the process Cassie meets and ultimately falls in love with one of the Saint Dominguean soldiers, Andre Dupre. When the Battle of Savannah begins, Andre comes under fire and is wounded. Cassie and another black soldier, Louis Dufour, commandeer a wagon and rescue the wounded and unconscious Andre. They seek medical assistance for him but are unable to get help. In desperation they attempt to get Andre back to Roselawn. During the escape Enoch re-emerges and spies Cassie. He and his two cronies gives chase. He tracks them to the plantation, then to St. Benedict's. When it becomes clear that Enoch will not relent in his pursuit,, Cassie and Andre undertake a tortuous journey by boat through the coastal waters of Georgia, seeking sanctuary at a Spanish fort in north Florida while Enoch continues to relentlessly pursue them.
