Cassell's Colloquial German is one of a newly revised series of handbooks which provide convenient and fascinating coverage of modern languages, and of the pitfalls and difficulties inherent in colloquial, colourful, or idiomatic usage.
This conveniently small (portable!) book has words and idioms arranged in standard dictionary format (for idioms this means organized by key words). Example sentences make usage very clear. I only have one complaint: idioms are not identified regionally. At any rate this book would serve admirably as an aid to translation or understanding. After the dictionary proper there are several smaller sections of words grouped by theme and translated in both directions: English false friends (extensive!), journalese, telephoning, food and dishes, travelling, motoring/technical auto terms, animal comparisons and analogies, AND a small section of English idioms. This little book is incredibly helpful and you won't need another one like it.
