Carrie Dances to the Beat: Every Step to Her Own Light

By Lesley D. Nurse

Carrie Dances to the Beat: Every Step to Her Own Light is an uplifting, full-color picture book about talent, growth, resilience, belonging, and learning to trust your own rhythm.

Carrie already knows how to move. Rhythm, percussion, and music bring her fully alive. But when she steps into a more structured world of dance, she discovers that natural talent and learning a new discipline are not always the same thing.

New counts, unfamiliar expectations, mistakes, and the pressure of learning alongside others challenge Carrie in ways she did not expect. As she keeps practicing, she begins to discover that growth does not require leaving herself behind. She can learn structure, discipline, partnership, and refinement while still holding on to the instinct and joy that make her shine.

Then an unexpected moment puts everything Carrie has learned to the test-and asks her to trust the strengths she carried with her all along.

With rhythmic language, expressive illustrations, and an emotionally recognizable journey, Carrie Dances to the Beat: Every Step to Her Own Light gives young readers a joyful way into conversations about self-confidence, perseverance, adaptability, peer dynamics, individuality, collaboration, and belonging.

Perfect for families, classrooms, libraries, hospitals, youth programs, and readers learning that there is room to grow, room to learn, and still room to be yourself.

For every child learning to grow without losing what makes them shine.
