Vera, born to a Spanish father, won the beauty contest of North Carolina. Meanwhile, the former colony had much difficulty recovering from the exhausting war of independence. After the pageant, the state appointed Vera's father as a minister . His job was to secure profitable trade deals with Spain. Paulo, who was a bit naive, did not see that his promotion was a trap to distract the people from seeing what was really going on.
