This is a great story for a summer read, book club selection or beach read. I read it in just 3 days. Being from S.C., I really enjoyed the references to places I knew and landscape descriptions I could visualize because I had been there. The only thing I would have liked to have seen is more about the backgraound of the problems Bailey had with her father.
Best In The World!

This is a beautifully written story of the friendship between four girls. From different backgrounds they come together to form a life long friendship. Set in the sixties at Pawley's Island, we see these girls get together each summer and grow up, but not apart.
Outstanding Novel

As a high school principal, I thought this was a great selection for my ninth graders as a summer reading assignment. I would certainly encourage English teachers to select this novel as a class reading assignment. I especially encourage those educators from North and South Carolina to consider this novel because of the many local references. The authors development of each character and the story's plot was amazing. I am using the various settings in this book as a spring board for researching historical events beginning in the 1960's. More importantly, I am having our students to focus on the themes of trust, respect, and responsibility as these are extremely important to developing our school's culture. There's much to be appreciated as the author allows the reader to journey through turbulent times in America from the limited perspectives of four young girls who have been influenced by their parents and eventually each other. The title is deceptive--boys can appreciate this one too!
