The name Carnegie Hill was first applied at the turn of the century to a small area surrounding Andrew Carnegie's mansion at 91st Street and Fifth Avenue. Today, the residential neighborhood is bounded on the west by Fifth Avenue, on the east by, but not including, Third Avenue, on the south by 86th Street, and on the north by 98th Street between Fifth and Park avenues, and 96th Street between Park and Third Avenues. These boundaries include the Expanded Carnegie Hill Historic District designated by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1974.
