The novel is set in the pop music scene of the 60's and 90's in the UK and the USA. The story is told in words and music, tracing the physical and emotional journey of the two protagonists as their relationship develops.
Julia loses her only parent, Kathleen. While sorting out her mother's belongings, she discovers that her biological father, contrary to what her mother told her, didn't die, and might still be living in the USA. To make a new beginning for herself, Julia decides to go to the USA for a holiday break. There she gets in touch with Alan, who like her father Gerry, was also one of the co-founders of the Yesenno, a musical group from the 60's. While journeying with Alan, Julia learns more about her parents' enigmatic past. He introduces her to the pop music world. Also she encounters her half brother. Alan becomes a turning point in her life. During their journey together in a camper, they become close, leading to a deep emotional relationship.
Music plays a central role in the novel. In addition to the central love story and the transformative American road trip, the novel also engages with the different cultural backgrounds of the protagonists, British and American.
