Carlo's Gap Year

By Mark Sotomayor

Summer break was supposed to be simple.
Carlo Schmidt just graduated high school with no plan, no money, and no idea what he wants out of life - only a mother demanding he find a job, a strange recurring dream he can't shake, and the nagging feeling that he was made for something more.
When a temp agency lands him a door-to-door sales gig, Carlo throws himself into learning his "why." But the doors that open aren't the ones he expects. A wheelchair-bound uncle from Mexico with a shoebox of dark secrets. A mysterious woman in the biggest house in the neighborhood who claims she summoned him - and knows his destiny. And a smooth-talking mentor whose shortcuts to success come with a price Carlo can't yet see.
By the time Carlo realizes the plane he boarded isn't headed to California, it's too late to turn back.
Unseen forces are fighting over Carlo's future - some from above, some from below. Before this summer ends, he'll have to learn the difference between destiny and deception, between the voices that promise everything and the One worth listening to when he can no longer do anything else.
Some journeys you choose. This one chose him.
