Welcome to my caricature sketchbook. This collection includes work from my high school years to the present. I began drawing caricatures around 1998, and I explore many styles in my drawings. I've included my exploratory sketches to show how I study a person's face until I get it right, displaying all my attempts until I nail the drawing. I love experimenting with different styles and exploring various shapes when I draw caricatures. My earliest introduction to this art form was when I was 5 years old. I went to Knott's Berry Farm and heard the sound of an airbrush. I witnessed the most amazing sight: an artist drawing a cartoon of a couple with their baby. This artist did not hold back and completely exaggerated their features. I didn't even want to go on any rides; watching them draw was the most captivating experience I had ever had. I didn't know people possessed such an incredible power of observation to create this art form called caricature. Determined to learn this art form, I faced many struggles. It took me years to learn how to draw and understand what I was doing. Caricature artists were like living gods to me. When I graduated high school, I applied for a job as a caricature artist and got hired. It took me years to draw decent caricatures, and once I was comfortable, I left for CalArts to learn animation and become an animator. The best years of my life were spent learning the art of caricature and working alongside great artists. This art form is my favorite because it allows me to break free from a specific style and create whatever I want. I was fortunate to work for a manager who appreciated unique styles. He encouraged us to have our own unique approaches, and we would share our perspectives on how we observed things. From drawing theme park caricatures, I wanted to learn how to draw quickly and depict anything at any time. That always appealed to me. I did not like spending a week on one drawing, so I practiced until I felt comfortable. However, I didn't like that I couldn't always draw what I wanted. People generally did not want to be made fun of or humiliated by a drawing while others pointed and laughed. I made a lot of people angry and even had a grandmother hit me. Now, I draw caricatures at home as a hobby and have a YouTube channel where I share all my knowledge on how to draw caricatures. I draw caricatures for fun, exaggerating and stretching features as I see fit, without worrying about people's feelings. I hope you find what I have in this book helpful.
