Cardiology: A historic journey

We believe the first book in English on cardiology was by Allan Burns of Glasgow in 1809, which included a section on malformations or congenital heart defects--and so to speak the beginning of pediatric cardiology. The first great school of cardiology was in Paris in 1806 with French physician Jean-Nicolas Corvisart (1755-1821), who also was the personal physician to Napol?on Bonaparte (1769-1821). A further stimulation for the birth of pediatric cardiology was struggles to deal with the ravages of rheumatic fever that was first identified by the English physician Thomas Sydenham (1624-1689). It was the link of heart disease to rheumatic fever and the identification of heart malformations (congenital heart disease) that led to the development of pediatric cardiology in the 20th century.
