Disillusioned by ethical double standards around him and dissatisfied with his situation and prospects, a 16-year-old boy decides to run away from his sheltered parochial home and seek his fortune as a hustler in a large metropolis. After four years of floundering on the streets, he embarks upon a dangerous trip across the Sahara Desert with an elaborate scheme to carry out a master con in the relatively wealthy but somewhat susceptible North African countries. Cocky, charismatic, intelligent, and reckless, he goes through a roller coaster of adventures. Encountering military despots and broken prisoners, experiencing intoxicating exhilaration and debilitating pain, having spectacular successes, and crushing failures, he repeatedly traverses some of the most perilous terrains in the world, searching for what he believes will bring him financial independence and personal fulfillment.
