More of a cartoon with people in it

Set in the ’90s (do not overlook this), warrior Vers (Brie Larson), without any memory of her past, is sent on a mission to save a spy whose cover is blown. Soon, due to circumstances, the sleeper will awake. Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) learns about her past and present, and a new reality. Nothing may change, but there is also a possible chance that soon there will be Captain Marvel (Brie Larson). And possibly a sequel or two. I did not know what to make of this movie. It is more of a cartoon with people in it. You may think, well, it comes from a comic book inspiration, and so it does. But there is plenty of leeway when adapting or designing for the big screen. This critter almost got turned off in the first five minutes; however, due to positive reviews, I decided to take a chance and go further into the show. Eventually, I caught myself watching it. However, it still seemed like a big cartoon. The formula was standard, so I assume that the reviews must’ve been for the acting or the actors. It seemed like they just picked Brie Larson out of a hat to play Carol Danvers / Vers / Captain Marvel; even though she has at this time at least 60 credits under her belt, I have never seen her before and felt like they picked Valley Girl. Samuel L. Jackson seems like a caricature of himself and just might be. Annette Bening (Queen Elizabeth, Richard III (1995)) seems like one of the only stable characters in the movie. Jude Law (Gattaca (1997)) made a good/bad/whatever adversary. What makes the movie is not the movie but the voiceover commentary telling what they are trying to accomplish. They may not have accomplished what they were attempting, but it makes the movie more palatable when you realize what they’re trying to do. The only negative is not the movie, but again part of the voiceover and a few introductions in other extras on the DVD, where they're in your face with “Oh, look, it’s a female she can act; isn’t that unique?” It’s like rubbing your nose in it instead of accepting it for what it is. All in all, I’m surprised that I watched the movie from the beginning to the end once with the commentary and once without the commentary.
