Rare Police Fiction

This is a rare police story, because our main cop is not particularly hard-boiled, nor does the story rely much on surprise. Instead we get a murder story that reveals a great deal about state politics, in this case, the machinations in the Illinois State Capitol. The December Illinois/Ohio setting is moody and real. And the most real of all is our hero, Captain Doug Ebersole--half toughened by pain, half softened by it.This is not murder story that keeps you on the edge of your seat. But it will draw you in and stick with you.Rodd Whelpley had better be around for a long time. Or I will punch him.
