An Absolutely Indispensible Book on Dyslexia

This book is both a poignant story of an intelligent young man's struggles and triumph over an affliction which, literally, nearly destroyed his life and a practical "manual" on how to watch for the telltale signs of dyslexia. Clarke takes the reader through the often tortured life of her dyslexic son and how she and her husband coped with the social, educational, and psychological problems which the son faced. She also provides the reader with well-detailed chapters on what is considered the best methods for teaching and helping dyslexic children and educators who have studied and successfully helped dyslexic children. Clarke also has a chapter, a very poignant chapter, containing her son's own story of his life as a dyslexic. Dyslexia is still a real hassle for young people. Clarke's son, Mike, was once declared mentally retarded because of his school's (a well-known independent school located in New York City) mishandling of his condition. Mike is now a physician. This book is a must read for educators, especially nursery school, kindergarten, and primary school teachers. Dyslexia is a condition which demands early intervention. Clarke's fine book make it very clear.
