The phone rang for what seemed like a hundred times. Then he answered. "Dad! Hi, uhhmmm. I wanted to know if I could come and stay with you for a while. Remember that you said that I could come and stay?" An awkward silence came over the phone. "Marie, sweetheart," (to this day I can remember his words); "I think you should stay with your Mom. I don't have any room for you here."It felt like my dad had just ripped my heart out, showed it to me, dropped it on the ground and stepped on it. I looked at my mother and began to cry. I tried to hold it in. I tried to play it off as if he wanted to talk to her and I had no idea what was going on. All I could do was hand her the phone and sit down. I was so stunned I think all I could hear was a high pitched whistle in my ear. My mom hung up and came over to me. I was humiliated and destroyed.
