Where is Little Bear? In this charming look-and-find book, highlighted by Jackie Morris's gorgeous animal fantasies, very young children explore theatrical and circus settings as they attempt to find the missing cub. The concepts of opposites, colors, and contrasts are introduced in the read-aloud nursery verse, and simple clues and vivid word images help children discover Little Bear, whether he's trying on a hat, standing on his head, or floating in a balloon. Gradually Little Bear moves into a more familiar landscape of tea, bath, and bedtime, a cue for little bears' bedtimes everywhere.
I just discovered this little gem and can't wait to purchase it as a gift for others during the holidays. In the children's book world it often seems that books with little or no educational merit have the most fantastic illustrations and prose. This isn't necessarily always a bad thing but I often tire of books that teach the alphabet/numbers or explore basic science, etc. that are just not as engaging as their "for the fun of it" counterparts. This book discusses opposites and introduces unique animals to very young readers with such gorgeous words and pictures that they will have no idea how good this dear story is for their minds. I liked the mixture of common animals with zoo animals, along with the taste of faraway cultures.

My 3.5-year-old has loved this book for about a year, although it's very simple. He loves looking at the beautiful illustrations and pointing out the little bear. Great for reading to sleepy kids, you can draw out the simple rhyme and mesmerize them with the paintings, before you know it they're relaxing!
Beautiful Illustrations!

This is a beautiful book with a fun story ending in bedtime as many good children's books do.
A Treasure of a Book

This book is fantastic for young children for both its language and its whimsical, enthralling illustrations. The rhyming words are simple and rhythmic, and the verse involve animals familiar to most young children (except kookaburra). In addition, the concepts of opposites (day/night) and similar-but-different (red/green) are used throughout. It's the illustrations, however, that make the book so special. While it's fun for kids to spot the little bear and what he is up to on each page, there is so much more to discover in each picture. Many of the other animals also show up on each page (but you need to look carefully for them) and there is clever repetition of motifs from illustration to illustration (peacock feathers, harebells, spirals). This attention to detail keeps me, as an adult, enchanted and invites close examination by children reading the book - even those who are not yet readers. I highly recommend it.
