Phoning a Dead Man: A race against Time and the Russian Mafia

Title: Phoning a Dead Man: A race against Time and the Russian Mafia Story: Hayley and her family are grieving for the loss of her brother John, who was killed in a demolition accident whiling doing a consult job in Russia. Or was it an accident? John's fiancé Annie thinks the details don't add up and she wants to journey to Russia to see the site for herself. After watching her mother retreat from the world, Hayley decides to accompany Annie to Russia to help her investigate the mystery since she is confined to a wheel chair and wouldn't be able to get to the site by herself. Meanwhile a mysterious man is found by the residents of a remote Russian village. He is wearing foreign cloths and carrying only a note book, a money clip and cell phone. He is consumed by fever and is mumbling about a bear and a fox that are after him. He also can't remember who he is or where he came from. This begins a story of greed, guilt and persistence that will lead Hayley and Annie to the remote outskirts of Russia and deep into a deadly struggle of power within one of the largest Mafia families in Russia. ------------------------------- This was a pretty good thriller/suspense book. It doesn't rely heavily on violence and there are no bedroom scenes. The story relies more on how Hayley and Annie overcome the obstacles in their way and how the stranger slowly makes his way across Russia with the help of the people he runs into. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for a fast reading suspense/thriller that is a little different. m.a.c

In Phoning a Dead Man, by Gillian Cross, John Cox a demolition expert, has been killed on the job in Russia. His sister Haley and is fiancée Annie, who is wheelchair-bound, want to see the sight for themselves. They decide to go do their own investigation. Upon their arrival, very rich Russian men whom Annie suspects are involved in the Russian mafia assist them. She knows she needs them to assist her and Haley around so she doesn't say anything. Meanwhile, while they are investigating John's death, he is alive somewhere in the forests of Russia searching for answers. John somehow suffered memory loss and all he knows is someone is after him to kill him. He has no idea who he is, where he is, or how he got there. Annie decides to have his cell phone traced because it was never recovered. They come up with a lead on where his phone is. The Russian men want to find the phone and John so bad, that they torture people who helped John so they could get to him. John was staying with Frosya and she spoon fed him and taught him how to walk again. The next person who helped him was willing to die for him. John is soon found and he gets his memory back but losses a very good friend. He might have his memory back, but will he ever be the same?........This is a very interesting book that will keep you on the edge of your seat. It has a lot of irony. Every time you think something will happen the complete opposite happens. I recommend this book to anyone who can read at a high school level. You will love it!!!!
